T5W#251-Top 5 Anime Films for a Summer Blockbuster Season

As far back as I can remember, I have always been excited for movies in the summer.  This is when the big guns come out, the mega hit movies that are exciting and demand to be seen more than once.  We…are not getting that this year, not in a traditional sense.  However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t movies out there that can fill that void, especially when it comes to Anime.  So on today’s Top 5 Wednesday, I’m digging into one of the biggest libraries of movies on the planet and selecting my Top 5 Anime Films for a Summer Blockbuster Season.  All classics, all fit the bill of movies that would be the ultimate summer Anime movie marathon.

#5-Cowboy Bebop: The Movie-Knockin on Heaven’s Door
Next year, this movie will be 20 years old and you know what…it’s still f***ing awesome.  Considering Cowboy Bebop is one of the coolest Anime titles in history, it’s no wonder if was released in the Summer season of 2001.  The action, the characters, the music, the animation, if you thought Bebop peaked with the final episode of the TV Series, director Shinichiro Watanabe and Studio Bones were on deck to let you know you hadn’t seen anything yet.  Best of all, you don’t have to have watched an episode of the show to enjoy this amazing movie.  See you at the marathon Space Cowboys.

#4-Akira
Every once in a while, an Anime film comes along that isn’t connected to a long running franchise and it becomes the true mega hit title of the season.  Akira is that kind of movie.  Based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s beloved Manga (he also directed the movie), Akira changed the landscape of the Anime film industry forever.  With a story that focuses as much on political and social commentary as much as it does the gratuitous amounts of action and gore, Akira is the textbook definition of a movie that can appeal to all audiences.  It’s still a mastepeice over 30 years later and will forever be one of the greatest titles in Anime history.

#3-Your Name
Ok so it doesn’t have to be about the amount of action or the size of the explosions.  Sometimes a film comes along that can be a monster hit on its own terms.  Your Name is a movie with a premise that seems familiar but is still a movie I couldn’t watch in live action.  Anime is the perfect visual medium to tell this magical tale of love across time and space.  The breathtaking animation, perfect soundtrack and a solid cast led by one of the most adorable couples in all of Anime, Your Name is an experience that should be taken by every Otaku at least once.  It’s as close to perfect as an Anime can get alongside Akira.

#2-Dragon Ball Z: The Movie-Resurrection F
When it comes to mega action spectacles, it doesn’t get much bigger than Dragon Ball Z.  Now I could have placed Dragon Ball Super-Broly in this slot.  But to represent Dragon Ball, I chose the last of the Z films.  Whereas Battle of Gods was a bit of an uneven return to form for the franchise, Resurrection F is the love letter to fans of Z and a big hug from an old friend.  Seeing Goku and Vegeta square off with Frieza again brings back memories of coming home after school to find out what happened next on Namek.  Plus you’ve got solid action with one of the best Z Team line ups that doesn’t include eternal annoyances Kid Trunks or Goten…just like old times.

#1-My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising
While much of it’s fervor was transferred over to Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia is still one of the most popular Anime in recent history.  I’ve shown the show plenty of love here on the blog and if I had to select one of Hero Aca’s two movies to put on this list, it would be Heroes Rising.  Not only does it blow Two Heroes out of the water in every way, it is the movie that exemplifies everything that makes My Hero Academia the stellar show that it is.  With messages of hope and inspiration and an excellent handling of the large and memorable cast of Class 1A to finally giving us the Deku and Bakugo team up we’ve always wanted… My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising might just be this franchises finest hour.
