When it dropped last week, it was impossible not to have
seen the debut trailer of the live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie coming this
November. And even if you somehow didn’t
check it out, you saw the backlash and man…this is a level of bad we haven’t seen
since the days of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in 1993. For those who may not be nerds or just want
some trivia: Sonic the Hedgehog is the chief mascot of Sega and was the star of
a successful series of Sega Genesis video games and a one time true rival to
Nintendo’s Mario. But then the Dreamcast
era came and died quickly and after two Sonic Adventure games, Sonic’s legacy
dipped with a string of titles that range from underwhelming to Worst Video
Games of All Time…and the spaces in between.
Suffice to say, the trailer was Sonic 2006 levels of bad and I’m here to
lend my thoughts on the matter here on todays Top 5 Wednesday: my Top 5
Thoughts on the Sonic the Hedgehog Debut Trailer
#5-The Real World:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Reading the official synopsis and learning the movie is
placing Sonic on our planet is one thing.
Seeing it’s actual reality is another thing all together. Sure we got to see something similar in the
Sonic Adventure games but Sonic and our world in a live action movie doesn’t
have the same kind intended effect. Why
do we need Sonic on Earth? Why couldn’t
this just be an all out CG flick set on Sonic’s homeworld with Tails and
Knuckles? Suffice to say, this probably
the last combo we ever wanted to think of when we first heard Sonic and Movie
in the same sentence.
#4-Honestly, Jim
Carrey isn’t bad
Years after the heyday of Ace Ventura and The Mask, Jim
Carrey is still one of the funniest men in cinema history. And, truth be told, he seems like a good fit
for Dr. Eggman/Robotnik. He’s eccentric,
goofy and can play a maniacal genius (depending on how you feel about Batman
Forever, I think the jury is split down the middle in general nerdom). I think I chuckled more at his bits than
anything actually involving Sonic in the trailer. I’m not saying Jim Carrey could single
handedly save this movie, but he might it entertaining, much like Raul Julia
(RIP) as M.Bison in the godawful Street Fighter movie with Jean Claude Van
Damme.
#3-Gangstas
Paradise
Ok…why? Was this
to make Sonic edgy or hip with the kids?
And if it’s the latter, why this song?
I mean I remember when Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise was the biggest song
of all time and yeah it was in and around Sonic’s big heyday on the Sega
Genesis. But this is just…weird. Not saying Gangsta’s Paradise is a bad song
in any sense but why not something more…idk current? Sigh, I’ll give credit where credit is due:
it’s use in the trailer did make me want to listen to a song I haven’t heard in
a long time…and wonder what the hell it’s doing in something related to Sonic
the Hedgehog…yes these are the things I ponder in my downtime.
#2-To the Design
Team: Don’t Waste that F’ing Second Chance with the Redesign
Ok, time for the elephant in the room, or rather the
abomination with the freaky teeth. The
worst thing about the trailer is Sonic himself.
WTF are we looking at? This is so
far from the too cool for school speedster we grew up with, it’s not even
funny. Was this really what the studio
thought would be a good way to merge Sonic with the real world? Thankfully, there’s a small glint of light at
the end of this dark tunnel. Basically
after a day of nothing but internet backlash, the director tweeted that he and
his team were going back to the drawing board on Sonic’s movie design. So, with luck, the entire monstrosity is
being scrapped in favor of something closer to the video games themselves. Movies don’t get this kind of second chance
often, least of all ones whos movies are about 6 months away from release. This movie might not be great regardless…but
at least Sonic can look like Sonic and not something grown in a test tube that
thinks its Sonic the Hedgehog.
#1-This
Achievement Hunter version is MUCH BETTER!!!!
Alright I’m so glad I decided to wait til this week to
cover this because a couple of days ago, the dudes over at Achievement Hunter
uploaded a very special GTA V Let’s Play called Sonic the Hedgehog: The
Movie. And let me tell ya…this is pure
genius. I love these guys already but
this video is the perfect answer to this trailer. Don’t believe me, check it out below…God
bless you AH…God bless you all.
