Depending on who you ask, Star Wars is in an overall
interesting state at the moment. People
either love the expanding universe TV Series or think theyre as bad (if not
worse) than The Rise of Skywalker. One
thing we can all agree on is that Star Wars Visions is an awesome anthology
series and it’s about time we got news that a third volume has been announced
for release sometime in 2025. Unlike the
more worldwide offerings of Volume 2, Volume 3 will be returning to Visions
original Anime roots with 9 new stories from a plethora of studios including
Studio Wit, Trigger and Production I.G.
My one fear of this approach is that while Anime and Jedi go hand in
hand, Volume 1’s biggest shortcoming was it was all lightsaber duels and little
else (as cool as those were). Volume 2
mostly looked past that with tales involving some Jedi but a lot of everyday
people in various adventures across the galaxy.
I really want Volume 3 to continue in this direction so for todays Top 5
Wednesday I’m sharing my Top 5 Story Ideas for Star Wars Visions 3.
The littlest and cutest Star Wars creation ever made it’s
amazing Grogu aka Baby Yoda hasn’t gotten any animated short films a la Marvels
I Am Groot. The ideas are endlessly
adorable and can be as simple as can be, so long as it’s Grogu doing Grogu
things. Personally, I’d have him getting
lost and having to find his way back to his new homestead where he and Mando
now reside following the end of Mandalorian Season 3. Lots of flips, force usage, squee worthy baby
sounds and his little waddle, like I said, five minutes of Grogu action is the
easiest entertaining win.
Pod Racing is one of the few things from The Phantom
Menace people can mostly agree is awesome.
While we got the fun and heartwarming I Am Your Mother in Visions 2,
what I think Visions 3 could use is a high octane, balls to the walls carnage
filled Pod Race. Also it should go as
hard as possible in size and scale, like Red Line levels of big, something to
make the Boonta Eve race on Tatooine look like a go-kart race by comparison. That race only teased how nasty Pod Racers
can be making it to the finish line.
Getting the Anime treatment can show off Pod Racing in its purest form.
A few years back, OtaKing Animation released an Anime
short inspired by the Star Wars: Tie Fighter simulator and it kicked ass. It told the story of a Tie Fighter Squadron
laying waste to a Rebel Alliance convoy without mercy. I think this short could use a modern day HD
update to look more bad ass than ever while also retaining the old school Star
Blazers/Macross style of space combat that makes it feel like it belongs with the
original trilogy. Sure the bad guys win
but hey, that’s fun to watch sometimes too right?
One thing the Anime Anthology’s of Halo: Legends and The
Animatrix have in common is a two part origin story of their worlds and how
they came to be. While I doubt Visions would allow such a project, it would be
cool to see a nice montage of highlights from Episode I-IX of the saga that
started it all with narraration by a big name from the franchise like Liam
Neeson as Qui Gon Jin or Daisy Ridley as Rey.
Just imagine seeing the Clone Wars bigger than ever, the epic lightsaber
duel from The Phantom Menace in all its Anime glory, the assault on both Death
Stars and even that iconic reveal from Empire, all chronicled and highlighted
in a complete Anime recap, oh and mix it to John Williams music too, that’s
also a must.
The purging of the Star Wars Expanded Universe once
Disney purchased Lucasfilm is still a sin few fan could ever forgive. Decades of awesome characters, mind blowing
stories and expansive history of a galaxy far, far away, all gone in favor of
what’s come with the Sequel Trilogy.
While I feel like all Visions shorts are meant to be cannon in some way
to the Disney slate, that doesn’t mean the Expanded Universe cant see the light
of day in Anime form. How cool would it
be to see Luke Skywalker’s Wife, Mara Jade, as the Emperors Hand? What about Han and Leia’s three kids getting
into mischief? Some more Knights of the
Old Republic lightsaber fair wouldn’t be out of the question either. You know what the say: Heroes get remembered,
but Legends never die.
