T5W#265-Top 5 Devil May Cry Games

Since quarantine began, I’ve been doing a ton of gaming in addition to watching Anime.  While ive definitely sunk more time than usual into Overwatch, I’ve also been revisiting some old single player favorites.  I did a Halo campaign marathon.  I replayed Resident Evil 4.  Most recently, I’ve dived back into the world of Dante the Devil Hunter and all the sick and awesome chaos he brings with each new adventure.  So for todays Top 5 Wednesday, I’m ranking his 5 main adventures (not including the DMC: Devil May Cry reboot that pretty much no one enjoys as far as I know, plus ive never played it).  Here are the Top 5 Devil May Cry Games.

#5-Devil May Cry 2
I only just played this game very recently and I can see why I held off on going through it.  I’d heard nothing but negative things about Dante’s first sequel…and they were right.  Dante’s character assassination aside (devolving from one line spouting bad ass to super serious average joe), Devil May Cry 2 feels like a huge step backwards from its game changing predecessor.  There’s no challenge to combat, the graphics feel like this was rushed through development, and the story is incredibly weak.  There is an opportunity to play as new lady lead Lucina.  But after finishing Dante’s lackluster campaign, I didn’t see the need to do so.  Hands down, Devil May Cry 2 might be one of the most disappointing sequels of all time.

#4-Devil May Cry 4
Devil May Cry 4 is a fun but ok outing for the franchise.  The story and backtracking has its hiccups but the game is most notable for introducing Nero to the universe.  Voiced by the eternally awesome Johnny Yong Bosch, Nero’s the next generation Dante from Devil May Cry 3-young, brash and boasting one liners to spare.  The game looks amazing for its time and the action is better than ever before.  And while getting to play as both Nero and Dante throughout the game is fun, future editions of 4 include new campaigns where you get to play as fellow Demon Hunters Trish and Lady, as well as Dante’s brother Vergil, making Devil May Cry 4 more of a family affair before Part 5 came along.

#3-Devil May Cry
The second and impaled Dante laughed off Trish’s taunts, drew his guns and blew up the bike she was throwing at him say, “Time to go to work boys,” I knew this was gonna be a game unlike any id ever played before.  While its difficult as hell, Devil May Cry has style, atmosphere and spectacle to spare.  Dante became a legend overnight thanks to his fusion of awesome sword and gun play.  Trish remains one of gamings sexiest leading ladies.  And it’s still a fun game to run through even nineteen years later.  Youre playing through history with this one.  And to think, this game originally began life as a potential Resident Evil 4 game…crazy but I don’t think I could ever see Leon Kennedy pulling off Dante’s moves (try as he might).

#2-Devil May Cry V
11 years after Devil May Cry 4 and 6 years after the poorly received DMC: Devil May Cry, Dante and Nero roared back onto the gaming scene with an adventure that was everything fans could’ve hoped for after a decade plus long wait.  With three powerful Demon Hunters at your disposal: Dante, Nero and the mysterious V, each with their own unique playstyles, a bevy of tricked out skills and weapons to choose from and one of the most personal tales in the series to date, Devil May Cry V is one of the best sequels out there.  Also, the game gets cudos for introducing one of the sauciest and most fun supporting characters in Nico, Nero’s chain smoking best friend and gunsmith.  Honestly, if you’re a little sekptical, just watch the sequence where Nero takes out a slew of Demons while Nico flips her van through the air…how the hell will Devil May Cry 6 ever top this?

#1-Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening
After Devil May Cry 2 failed so spectacularly, there was nowhere to go but up…or rather backwards.  Much like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Dante’s Awakening is a prequel to the series, focusing on a younger, less mature Dante tearing his way through a demonic tower to fight his brother Vergil.  The game introduced all of Dante’s special fighting styles that are still staples of the franchise today.  Better yet, the game does everything right that Devil May Cry 2 did wrong: more detailed graphics, stellar cutscenes, a more fun Dante, and a story that matters.  From Dante’s battle with Vergil to the introduction of fan favorite Demon Huntress Lady to any of Dante’s epic boss fights that acquire him new and deadlier weapons, there no reason you shouldn’t be having fun playing this game.  Every time I do, I always feel like a bad ass…just like a Devil May Cry game should.
