Well Dear Readers, November is upon us once more and you
know what that means: Godzilla Month Returns.
Ever since Godzilla Minus One came out in 2023, I’ve been keeping every
November clear for nothing but cheesy Kaiju action from the King of the
genre. After four years, I’ve still got
a fair amount of Showa and Hesei Era Godzilla films to check out and review. Think there’s enough for two more of these
special events at least. So which of
these remaining flicks am I most excited to pick apart and in a couple of cases
experience for the first time? Well with
Godzilla Month V in full swing and Godzilla Minus Zero stomping its way
stateside on Friday, we’re looking ahead to the future of the King of the
Monsters time at the Anime Corner on todays’ Top 5 Wednesday with the Top 5
Godzilla Movies I’ve Still Gotta Cover in Future Godzilla Months.
Not gonna lie, Godzilla Month VI is likely to be very
Hesei heavy since I’ve only got three more in that series to review. I’m also thinking about doing another co-led
Godzilla Month by bringing Mothra into the mix.
As such, a combo of Godzilla and Mothra film reviews wouldn’t be
complete without their big 90s rematch. Considering
how well the Heisei Era has been to Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah, I’m
guessing they’ll do just as well by another one of Toho’s and Godzilla’s most classic
foes.
This was the beginning of the reign of another King: King
Ghidorah. A Monster so fierce and
powerful, it took more than just Godzilla to bring him down. I think this might actually be the first time
in the franchise where there were more than two Kaiju on screen at once. Considering Ghidorah is probably my all time
favorite Godzilla foe and I’ve looked at two of his subsequent major features: Invasion
of Astro Monster and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, it’s long overdue I take a
look at where Godzilla’s rival first touched down on Earth.
#3-Return of Godzilla
This is one that a lot of people really, really like,
usually ending up on either Top 10 or even Top 5 Best Godzilla Movies of all
time. It’s Godzilla’s grand and darker
reintroduction into the mainstream as the unstoppable force of nature he was
originally presented as and not the savior of humanity like in the later Showa
Era. Thing is, I’ve seen two other new
introductions for Godzilla that have set quite the high bar in the last few
years: Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One, and they are damn good movies
(Shin is my all time favorite Godzilla film).
Can Return of Godzilla match them with me?
#2-Godzilla vs. Megalon
I’ve seen my fair share of bad Godzilla films but I don’t
think I’ve even touched the ones of true legend. Godzilla vs. Megalon is also one of two
Godzilla films to be featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 and is nso
infamous I cant help but hear “He’ll have to sit and watch them all…whenever I
see Godzilla do that stupidly infamous tail slide that they added to their
title sequence for a little bit. Also
there’s Jet Jaguar…and Godzilla: Singular Point single handedly made me hate
that tin can that stole most of Godzilla’s thunder from his own show. Is it the worst? Who knows but apparently it’s not as bad as…
Minilla is easily one of the most hated Godzilla
characters of all time. From his design
to his ineptitude, you wouldn’t believe he’s the son of Godzilla himself. Hell Heisei Era’s Little Godzilla has more
backbone than he does. Well on either
side of one of the greatest Godzilla films ever made, Destroy All Monsters, sit
these two dregs that few fans can defend.
One introduces the crime against nature and the other is a starring
vehicle for him that’s basically a clip show.
Maybe I’m subconsciously saving these two for last cause I don’t wanna
suffer through them. This could be the
greatest Godzilla challenge ever double featuring these two.
